FOOTBALL RIGHTS IN AFRICA

In case you are wondering and always asking yourself where has my favorite football league gone to, here i will help you find it. This article serves to enlighten you on which pay TV service providers have the rights to certain football games. Please note that this article is talking about football rights in SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA. What you will need to understand is that some rights are shared while some are exclusive. Shared rights means more than one broadcaster can air the same football games whereas exclusive means at a given region no other broadcaster has permission to do so. In our region here we have three clear cut pay TV service providers namely KweseTv(KWESE SPORTS) by Econet Media , Dstv (SUPERSPORT) by Naspers and the Chinese owned Startimes(STARTIMES SPORTS).

KWESE SPORTS
Kwese sports (KS) are the newest players in the market with around 19 months in service, but they have managed to seal some big deals proving that is committed to going all out to compete with the already established broadcasters. Some of the services is actually free through its kwese free sports platform. KS has rights to the EFL championship which is the richest 2nd division league in the world. It has exclusive rights to the Brazilian league. KS also has rights to the copa delrey, the UEFA nations league, the EFL Carabao Cup and FreeToAir World Cup games. KS has Free To Air English Premier League games meaning at least one or two FTA PL games are aired every week.

SUPERSPORT
Supersport (SS) is the oldest player in the market when comparing to others and hence over the years has gained quite a world class competitive advantage. It has become what some call a monopoly. But i just like to see them as a powerhouse whom however are failing its customers especially of late with losing on so many football rights deals. SS boasts an exclusive rights deal of the premier league, making it the world's largest premier league broadcaster, broadcast all 380 games live. It also has exclusive rights to the Spanish LaLiga, broadcasting all 380 games live and in HD. SS has exclusive rights to the UEFA champions league and the UEFA Europa league. Other football rights include the UEFA nations league which it shares, the European qualifiers and the World Cup.

STARTIMES SPORTS
Startimes Sports (ST) is actually the provider of the most number of leagues in our region. I am sure most people especially in Zimbabwe don't know about it. ST is the one that beat SS to the exclusive rights of the Bundesliga and Italian SeriaA. ST broadcasts all the games live and in HD. ST also has rights to the French Ligue 1, the Dutch Eridivise and the Belgian Pro League through its partnership with FoxSportsAfrica. ST also provide its customers with the EFL championship and the Chinese Super League. It has rights to all FIFA juniors world cup competitions, the European qualifiers and exclusive rights of the international champions cup. The other top league on ST is the American Major League Soccer (MLS).
